Weehawken’s First ‘Yappy Hour’ Was So Fun You Guys
We gave you a heads up about last week’s dog-friendly happy hour in the previous Gazette, but if we’re honest, we had no idea how good it would be. The Weehawken Elks pulled out all the stops, and the weather was perfect. Some unexpected flourishes:
Cool stuff they had for dogs:
Many types of biscuits, from schmancy Trader Joes dog cookies to much-loved Pup-Peroni — all free for anyone with paws who showed up
Bubble machine!
Play fountain, room to fetch, and a selection of freshly-filled dog bowls
Cool stuff that was available for humans:
Lorraine’s homemade hibiscus passionfruit lemonade
Free mozzarella/tomato skewers as well as popped chips
A bar: set up by the entrance so you could buy a drink with your dog
Music, conversation, great views, and meeting new neighbors as the sun set
The next Weehawken Elks Yappy Hour is 10/4, so mark (or bark?) your calendars and we’ll update you when we get closer.
Bad Guy Gets Away Until He Doesn’t 👮
So you know how you see disturbing videos online and wish there was some context, info, or followup? We do. That’s why real journalists are so important.
There was a video posted on July 5 that became a popular share — it showed a pickup driving badly and the caption was, “Witnesses report a pedestrian struck in a hit-and-run incident by an erratic driver at Port Imperial.”
And of course the comments were lighting up with people concerned for the possible victim and wanting to know more. Luckily, a local journalist seems to have filled in the blanks.
The bad news is that more than one person was hit at the waterfront by a pickup—it was three people. And the good news? No one died, thank Thor, and the police arrested a guy, 25, charging him with a heck of a lot for allegedly hitting a car and then hitting three people. Not gonna link the video here, but go read the article linked below, because the video that “appears to show the pickup truck in question” is there, but now with the article to tell you more:

Pop-Up Shop Coming To Hamilton Cove
Like empanadas and supporting new businesses? August 2nd and 16th are the two dates the Pretty Pâté pop-up shop will pop up in the lobby of one of those new-fangled waterfront buildings. Location is “Tower A lobby” of the Hamilton Cove apartment buildings at 800 Harbor Blvd. If you go, let us know, and share some pics?
Hoboken Has An Honorary Bird, And We’re Kinda Jealous
On July 10th, the Hoboken City Council officially made the Common Tern—not to be confused with the Comintern—their honorary bird, as reported by TAPinto.
Wait, what? Who has an official bird?
Apparently, a few places do. Chicago made the peregrine falcon their feathered friend in 1999, and according to Hawaii magazine, Honolulu made the manu-o-Kū—also known as the common white tern—their official bird in 2007.
And the Common Tern has a sad backstory of having had their feathers hunted for fashion, and, according to Wikipedia, occasionally being stuffed to adorn hats. YIKES.
But the Common Tern also has a happy story of making a Hoboken waterfront comeback, and some of it is thanks to the help of some dedicated bird nerds who even have plans to make a floating island for them! Visit www.ourtern.com (yes, they have a whole website about this) for more details and to signup for their newsletter.
Question: What bird should Weehawken pick, if any, as our official bird? Leave a comment below with any ideas.
In Brief
Last week we attended a first-ever “Hoboken Moms speed networking” event at Carpe Diem, co-hosted by Rachel Mongiello of Cole Schotz P.C. (a law firm that was founded in 1928) and Heather Saydah of Kroll (who do “risk and financial advisory solutions”). It was fantastic to meet a diverse group of professional women from different fields—VP’s, Founders, and more. If/when it happens again, we’ll let you know.
Speaking of things we learned at the networking night… we met a woman who started a new-ish site called “Hoboken Now” that has lots of local stuff, like the details on the St. Ann Italian Festival happening now. Just note the address: it’s hobokennow.co, ending in .co — if you go to .com, it will redirect you to nj.com, and that’s not the same thing. We screwed up a few times looking for it, so learn from our mistakes!
We used “Why Dontcha” in a headline and if you didn’t know, it’s a 1972 album and song by West, Bruce & Liang. We didn’t know but yeah, it’s pretty slamming. Thanks Wikipedia.
A nice reader we ran into at the latest Weehawken concert said we really should feature Arra Sinaloa, a northern Mexican Restaurant they highly recommend for their food and great service. So here we are giving it a shout out! It’s that easy people.
Remember the Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan movie we wrote about that was filming all over Hoboken this spring? A teaser for the movie came out yesterday, and says it’ll be in theaters in December. Watch: A Complete Unknown official teaser on YouTube.
