Hello people! Thanks for reading the Weehawken Gazette. This issue will be short, sweet, and filling, so grab a brain fork and dig in…
Sunday 6/30: Free Jazz In Hamilton Park
Did you catch last week’s kickoff summer concert featuring Finish This, seen above, in Hamilton Park? It was excellent, and drew as big a crowd as ever, even though the start time was pushed more than an hour and a half later than originally planned due to the heat. Note: The photo above is from 2023 only because the sky was bluer than last Sunday, and our editor prefers blue skies to heat-dome greige.
Flash forward to this Sunday: The Hudson County Jazz Buskers, pictured below, are taking the stage in Hamilton Park at 5PM. It’s free and the views can not be beat.
The description from the band:
The Hudson County Jazz Buskers pop up and perform your favorite hard bop, samba and bossa nova jazz in the parks and streets of Hudson and Bergen County. They live to connect with people while keeping the jazz tradition alive. Snap your fingers, tap your feet, and leave your earthly woes at the door.
The Hudson County Jazz Buskers are:
Richard Woods: Sax
Austin Jaffe: Piano
Ricky Dennis: Bass
Scott Dennis: Drums
The Weehawken Gazette reached out to confirm these buskers will not be passing a hat — indeed the Township of Weehawken has filled it already. So yeah, it’s free! Ladies and gentlemen, start your picnic engines… 🧺🏃♀️🏃♂️
Actual Important NoHu Rent News
Looking around social media and listening to friends, you can’t help but hear stories about how some people’s rents seem to be going up by more than they can manage and/or more than expected. And according to the law, rent increases can't be nuts. Or in actual legal speak, NJ protects renters from "unconscionable” increases. But what exactly is "unconscionable"? And are some buildings actually supposed to be rent controlled? And what are local politicians doing about this, if anything? We are not experts, but luckily a real reporter is on it, and has been on this for the last two years. The latest article by Caren Lissner writing for Patch will help you understand the backstory and some of the latest developments in Hoboken and Jersey City. It’s important to get your news from a real reporter, so here you go:

Local Restaurant Closes Forever
According to Google, Baumgart’s Cafe in Edgewater, NJ is open right now. Except it’s not. We heard a rumor it was gone and it has, in fact, “permanently closed”, according to the woman who just answered the phone at their Ridgewood location. This is a bummer for parents who liked to score a kids meal that wasn’t just fried stuff, while also enjoying sushi. Gee, if only a new restaurant would open…
Local Restaurant Opens, Huzzah!
Last Saturday a big block party festooned with pink balloons, a DJ, and local vendors took place to celebrate the opening of the newest Alfalfa, located at 92 Bloomfield in Hoboken. This one is not only super close to our fave local bookshop, fave soccer pub, and fave guitar shop, but it’s also hallowed ground for foodies, as it’s the former location of Sobsey’s Produce. 25 people who made it in the door first got a swag bag, free donut and flowers. And there was a local celebrity on the scene: Dr. Nicole Tully. Dr. Tully is a caring professional and she doesn’t need the advertising (when you are a good doc you get booked fast!), but we wanted to give her a special shout out here. In short, Alfalfa salads were delish, doctors should be given flowers regularly, and we wish the Alfalfa team the best on their new location.

We Are Super Psyched To Be Wrong
In the last Gazette we wrote that unlike other surrounding towns, no businesses in Weehawken were featured in the surplus food app TooGoodToGo. A kind reader named Ashley wrote in to say that actually, there is a Weehawken place in the app! And then we dug deeper and published this correction which we will leave here… Update after publish 6/21: a kind reader pointed out that Fabiano’s Pizza is in the app! And we found Whole Foods Weehawken is also there. Our bad. We will provide a correction and shout out in the next Gazette but our offer still stands to feature a biz that joins.
May Their Memory Be A Blessing
We don’t want to share bad news, but we also don’t want to overlook what’s important. And people in our community who work to make it better are very important. That’s why we are sharing this very sad news about a member of our community, as posted June 22 on X, formerly Twitter, by Weehawken High School Principal Robert Ferullo:
Note: If anyone would like to submit memories of Kenny in tribute, contact us, we would be happy to share.
