Be still my bleeding heart…
The photo above was taken May 14, 2007 in Weehawken. It was in someone’s front garden on Highwood Ave. This plant is called a “bleeding heart” and if you think I knew the Latin name for it without Googling it, you have way too much faith in me. But it is one of my favorite plants because it doesn’t need a lot of sun, is super showy, and always blooms around Mother’s Day in Weehawken.
Speaking of local ways to mom’s heart…
There’s a fabulous show coming to Hoboken two days before Father’s Day: June 14 comedian Ophira Eisenberg* is bringing her hit comedy podcast Parenting Is a Joke to Hoboken’s Mile Square Theater for a live recording. Here’s the description: The evening will include stand-up comedy as well as hilarious and insightful conversations with comedians about their careers and the joys (and challenges) of raising kids while pursuing their creative passions.
What’s even better? This show will have an optional babysitting add-on. How great is that? Might be the first ever comedy show with babysitting option. Tickets here: Parenting is a Joke at Mile Square Theater. Ophira is a top touring club comic, she wrote a great memoir that was optioned for TV, and she’s known for her long-running show on NPR. Follow Ophira here on TikTok and here on Instagram in case TikTok gets banned.
Weehawken pool memberships
Weehawken pool memberships for the 2024 season are on sale now. It’s going to open Memorial Day weekend and then it’s only open Saturday and Sunday until June 25th, when it’ll be open everyday. Why? Sounds simple, but it’s not obvious: a lot of nice teenagers who work there are in school until then. Go here to enroll. If you want the full scoop on fees (for residents and non-residents) and hours, here’s the town’s flyer. And yes, there’s also day passes this year, but they are very limited and you need to buy them online.
Free cheese? Yes. Cheesy comedy? No.
The Hawk is a comedy and music show featuring top acts and is held at the Weehawken Elks downstairs pub. May 17 is our last show before the summer break and will feature a free pre-show cheese tasting for anyone who has a ticket, sponsored by Crowley Cheese. Located in Mt. Holly, VT Crowley is celebrating its 200th year in biz this year. If you think Cabot is legit, get ready to have your mind blown by all natural handmade cheese. Tickets are $18 plus fees in advance and $25 at the door (if available). Get tickets now right here. Acts include Matt Goldich, a writer for late night TV, Chris DeLuca, a local legend and TV writer, Susannah Perlman a comedian and producer, plus composer and band leader Willa Bassen and her trio.

Tah for now nice nabes!
*Disclosure: I’ve been friends with Ophira since she arrived in NYC, but I’m also her fan girl. And if this show doesn’t become a runaway smash hit in Hoboken, land of a million gold-plated strollers, then I’ll lose all faith in humanity.
