It Was Raining Up
Yes the rain we’ve had lately is that kind of annoying rain that laughs at you and your umbrella. It’s spraying and swirling so there’s no way to avoid it. You can stay in the house. If you do go out you can imagine the rain is trying to mess with you and you can get mad. Or, you can just laugh and keep walking. Yes, there’s so much terrible stuff in the world right now, we believe the only thing to do is to look up. Once you do, you’ll see “the clouds are in your head” which is in one of our favorite songs by Joy Oladokum. So there you go. Below there’s a song if you want it, and if you don’t, well just leapfrog over it to the next headline! Your choice. Listen? Or jump? No wrong answer — 1, 2, 3, — go!
📣Weehawken 40 Wallington 14
Friday night lights burned bright at the Weehawken stadium on 10/29 and spirits were high. The bands played and marched, the cheerleaders amazed, the cross-country team sold wheelbarrows full of delicious home-baked treats, and a football sailed through the goalposts into what some call the magical Weehawken Woods, but others just call, “those big rocks and weeds on the north side of the field.” Where is that football now? Well we actually asked and two people who work there who said, “it might roll down eventually” or “it might get eaten by a squirrel.” But they were busy keeping the game safe for everyone, and didn’t have time for the Gazette’s kooky “where does the football go” question. And we get it, and they are right.
Wanna Know Real Weehawken School News?
There’s a FABULOUS new newsletter the admin is producing to bubble up all the exciting stuff the kids are accomplishing in a great school that is humming along mostly under the radar… not having a local newspaper does stink. But this helps! The most recent one is the 2nd and they say it’ll go out monthly. It also has helpful info about kid-friendly events like Trunk or Treat.

👻 AHHHHHH!!!
Thanks to neighbor Jean O’Reilly, who sent this stunning photo of 745 Blvd. East in Weehawken. She reports that it is “even livelier than last year” and takes “about 10 minutes” to experience the whole installation. Even better? Some even jump out at you.
Related Hoboken fun: Saturday 10/26/24 there’s the annual HoBOOken 5K which we’ve run for more than 8 years. All proceeds go to the Hoboken Shelter and it’s crazy fun and yes nearly everyone wears a costume and every registered racer gets a T-Shirt and a medal. Learn more and sign up at: www.hobooken5k.com
Police Help Woman
Last week a person in Weehawken was worried about something in their house and called the police to check if everything was safe. She hadn’t called the police once in over a decade as a homeowner. The police showed up fast, were super nice and helpful, and then went on their way. Thanks Max, Melissa and Frank!
Weehawken Book Clubs Are En Fuego
We see a lot of book clubs springing up locally and this is a great thing. Here to report Weehawken Library has two adult book clubs that are really fun. The two choices for next month are waiting for you to get them and they are FREE, because library. 10/21 at 7P is The House Across the Lake and Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Club is 10/28 at 7P and the pick is Sea of Tranquility. Rumor: One of these book clubs is planning a party at the end of the year. And by party, we mean someone might bring funny hats and streamers and you can’t stop her.
Contest Winner Wins
We ran a cool giveaway on August 15 in this newsletter. The prize was to receive an original Bob Shea doodle that is also a great piece of FArt… and the winner is… Barbara D! See the original post here and that’s the envelope from Bob, above! And Barbara gets her prize hand delivered October 3rd. We aren’t sharing what’s in the envelope because it’s not our prize and if they wanna share after they get it, we’ll share. Note: FArt is what we call “Funny Fine Art” — but we have a event wizard and artist friend who calls it something else and she’s putting together a big show of funny art and so we’re calling Bob now… ring ring!
JUICY LOCAL GOSSIP HOT ‘N FRESH!
Hold onto your hats! People send us lots of tips. We like all the tips. They are often funny or something we didn’t notice, like the amazing Halloween house in town. But gonna be honest, half the tips are bad things. That’s fine, we don’t shy away from bad things. And please don’t stop talking about what you think is bad… people shouldn’t shut up, especially if their ultimate aim is to do good. But people sometimes ask us stuff like, “I sent you a picture of dog crap on the sidewalk, and dog crap on the side walk is bad, so why won’t you print it and tell the word?”
Well in this space, the Weehawken Gazette, we have made an editorial decision to…
Yes we are very passionate about making things better, just like you, whoever you are. And all the things you don’t like? Many of them we might not like too. However! People today are NUTS. Angry. We are all so freakin’ tired of screaming into the void of the internet.
Monkeys screaming danger 24/7 is exhausting and not productive. That’s why the monkeys are smarter than us. They don’t do that.
In short, we at the Weehawken Gazette stand for truth, justice, and the American way. Democracy is messy, and so is being an adult, but we need to get to know our neighbors and we need to laugh more. And we aren’t here to change minds because that’s creepy. Leave my mind alone!
All we know is we are team do something. Do what? Help! Everyone is yelling “do something!” but then not putting their skin in the game. But stop assuming bad intentions — of everyone! If you do something, you learn and grow. Yess, we would like to start a kindness pandemic.
Weehawken Superfriends — Unite!
Untie the bonds of gloom and chains of drudgery! There’s a very cool flowering of fun stuff happening on Park Ave. in Weehawken. Keep your eyes peeled or just walk down the street with your guitar or bongos or flute and you’ll find the magic door. And it’s not creepy. Just fun. Hint: The fun is already flowing from the center of many holes…
If needed, here’s some groovy music as you puzzle that out:
Q: What’s The Deal With Cats In Strollers?
Do people just want to spend more time with their cat? That makes sense. We aren’t cat people, meaning we never had one, only dogs. Anyway, if you have actual experience rolling a cat around in a stroller, please enlighten us in the comments.
What we don’t want: making fun of people who do it if you don’t have actual experience. That’s dumb and easy and we like to know things. We want the wisdom and we want to tease the answer out of someone who knows. If you see someone strolling down the street with a cat in a stroller, maybe ask them, but only in a nice way. There might be a very good reason and we just don’t know it.
