🪦🗞️ NJ Wrapping Paper
Before we get to bar trivia, bagpiping and boob board updates, wanted to mention that The Jersey Journal is closing in February which is really tragic. There goes another legit news source.
This article in the Columbia Journalism Review by Helene Stapinski is worth reading if you care which you should:
As scrappy and gritty as the city it covered, the only newspaper in Hudson County, N.J., will close in February, at age 157.

Hoboken Wins At Trivial Pursuits
Did you know January 4th was national trivia day? If you did, maybe you are the target demo for the 12+ trivia nights you can find in Hoboken in January.
What the actual heck?
Yes, we in Weehawken, land of no trivia nights, are kind of jealous. Where are these trivia nights happening? More like where aren’t they happening? We found listings for Black Bear, Wicked Wolf, House of Que, the Shannon, Metropolis, Louise & Jerry’s, McSwiggans, Schmitty’s, 8th Street, Willie McBride’s, Ale House & The Shep.
How can the Mile Square City support this much trivia? Why are all other NoHu locales so behind in trivia technology? Once we looked into this we found even Edgewater Place boasts one, at Bareburger. And why do we even care, since we haven’t even been to one?
According to experts*, three of the nights are run by the same person and there’s talk of 8th Street being the best one, but we really don’t know. There’s talk of cash prizes too. We’d love to try them out, so if you are one of the legions of bar owners that does a slamming trivia night, or if you yourself put on a trivia night you think deserves more play, be in touch. We also need to point out the Mile Square City is in fact 2 square miles if you count the underwater land, which proves we are totally the nerds who need to go to a trivia night.
Speaking of trivia, David Bowie’s birthday is January 8, and you can head to Jersey City for a Bowie birthday celebration on Saturday January 11, which is close enough. Check out The Loser’s Lounge for details and the link to buy tickets. They normally play Joe’s Pub, so this is a cool op to experience them on this side of the Hudson.
Ooohhh Feel That Burnsing Sensation
Hoboken Elks are having their 4th annual Burns Night party on Saturday January 25th 6P-10P. It’s $75 a person and the proceeds of this blockbuster bagpiping blowout go to a variety of good causes. In brief this is what you get:
What is a Robert Burns Supper? It’s a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet and Scottish national hero Robert Burns, traditionally held on or near the poet's birthday in January, known as Burns Night.
What can I expect? The evening will involve drinks, music including performances by a bagpiper, a full formal meal, and poetry.

RIP Boob Board
Our dearly beloved boob billboard is now gone, replaced by a very classy one from Audible. We’ll show the bodacious one again because, why not?
'Why did we love it so? Because it perplexed us. That lady in a red bathing suit could stop traffic/cause a crash but luckily we were walking when we saw it. We even conducted a poll to see if the world thought she was before or after boob job. Well the results are in — and the results are inconclusive, no?
Anyway, for now let’s just enjoy our Audible billboard and yeah, if you sign up for Audible via the link here, your Gazette reporters** might earn a commish.
Speaking Of Boards…
Here’s an update on the need for a community board we wrote about in May. Some enterprising souls got tired of seeing nothing on the Lidl chalk board and started taping signs up. It’s not beautiful, and the “wall of nothing” outside the store is still a lint-filled wall of nothing, but this is a start. Huzzah!
In Brief
Weehawken High School boys basketball won during a holiday championship. Story on NJ.com. As of Monday January 6, they remain undefeated.
Weehawken High School also announced that their football scarves totally sold out via the pre-order form. It’s the accessory the world needed and we are totally taking some credit for helping hype them before release. See: Weehawken Scarves Are Lit

Another great issue! Yes it is tragic that the JJ is closing. People only realize how much they needed their local press once it's gone. I'm glad for the Gazette though!
