Life has not been easy lately, but the lilacs blooming and the tulips tuliping have given us a bit of hope. So without further blather, here’s what’s happening…
Fulop Running for Governor, Literally
The NJ primaries are coming soon and as the race heats up one Democrat out of six in the field got our attention by bolting up the notoriously long and steep Weehawken steps. Steven Fulop is a guy whose Wikipedia page says he’s done marathons and an Ironman thingy that took almost 12 hours, so we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that he actually ran it, and didn’t yell “CUT!” after each flight, as we would have.
We aren’t endorsing Fulop — we aren’t endorsing anyone yet. And it’s not like he’s the only tough guy/gal in the field. Mikie Sherrill, the congresswoman running for governor, is a former Navy helicopter pilot, former prosecutor, and has four kids, which seems way harder than any boot camp to us.
Anyway, to get an idea of who is running and what they think, there’s a primer linked below, and head to the NJ voter information portal for dates/registration-checking/all you need to know. And if any of the candidates want to visit with and/or place ads in the Gazette? Let’s talk.

Fox News
The only fox news we can get behind is made of 100% actual 🦊…

Yes, the other day we spotted a beautiful creature just hanging out east of Blvd East, and we stopped to watch and marvel, pointing it out to the tourists who were only looking at the skyline. For the full story, plus more photos and a link to a foxy video, see the Earth Day story that Caren Lissner wrote for Patch, linked below — it also links to photos of Hoboken’s highly-disturbing worm tornados.

Feeling It In The Lumber Region
You might have noticed, but the Dykes Lumber in Weehawken, pictured above, closed in March of this year. According to Jersey Digs, it was purchased this summer by Amtrak as part of the Gateway tunnel project. Initially offered $14.8 million, Dykes Lumber handcrafted a proposal showing the property was actually worth more — a lot more. The argument they floated held water, or maybe Amtrak just felt that fighting this in court would whittle away their time and money. In any case, for just over 2 acres, the price Dykes got in the end was $60 million.
We called Dykes this week for comment, and interestingly, choosing “Weehawken location” from their phone menu puts you through to their newest location on Tonnelle avenue in North Bergen. According to the nice person who picked up the phone, it’s been open for two months. We asked if the $60 million payday meant they had a nice break room and free coffee? The guy laughed and said, “We have two break rooms — and the coffee is always free.” Way to go, Dykes. You guys #nailedit. Maybe you should change your name to Dyke$?

April 27: Free Women’s Wellness Expo
Head to Hoboken on Sunday for this head-to-toe fair with medical, dental, and fitness/massage experts all focused on women’s health. This event gets extra points for the venue — the Hoboken Elks is a beautiful building right on Washington — and for featuring our favorite PCP/GYN, Dr. Nicole Tully, who will be a part of the program.

May 17: Cantigas Women’s Choir Performs in Hoboken
We are totally biased because we sing in this choir, which draws members from Tenafly to Jersey City. It’s happening 5/17 at 7:30P in St. Matthew’s church, Hoboken and includes a “cultural dessert reception” afterwards for attendees. Basically you get to eat sweets from the lands which you’ll hear represented in the program. We can’t think of a dessert culture we wouldn’t welcome, can you?
Price: $25 for adults, $15 for seniors, $10 for students. Get tickets here, and note that more than 100 tickets have already been sold—and it will sell out.
Pool Blues / We Toldya So
Seems memberships for the Weehawken pool are now sold out and some people are peeved, as heard by word of mouth and as seen on Reddit. On the Weehawken rec site it says, “MEMBERSHIP HAS REACHED CAPACITY AND IS CLOSED FOR THE SEASON. DAY PASSES WILL BE AVAILABLE WHEN SEASON STARTS.”
For our readers, this shouldn’t be a problem, since we warned you in February that it was the hottest ticket in town. Maybe we should’ve written it in all caps to really get the message across? Still, we feel bad for those who missed out. Consolation prize? You won’t hafta see the Gazette staff* stuffed into their bathing suits.
Community Board In Bloom
In June of last year we shared a picture of the mysterious board in Lidl that had nothing on it. We may have then put up the first ever thing on this board. OK, we did. And then? It grew. It’s grown so much that the thing we put on it recently to promo the Gazette got ripped down for someone else’s thing. Ah well. We’re just glad to see proof of life, and that was our aim when we wrote about the random fliers everywhere and the “wall of nothingness.” Next idea? Make the Tower Plaza parking lot a town center, or at least have times where it’s cordoned off for roller skating/dancing/a farmer’s market/anything other than just parking.

A neighbor seeks help for her parents, and pass this along if you know anyone.
“Looking for a helper for my parents in the evenings at their home. The assistance is to make my mom’s life easier as she cares for my father who is recovering from a series of illnesses. It would involve getting him up from the bed, helping him do small movements improve circulation, helping with feedings as he is using a feeding tube.
